but if you buy a GPS system for you car. is it something that you have to keep paying for (kind ofl like when you buy a cell phone, and you have to keep paying if you want to use it)

    Not a stupid question whatsoever.

    You will not have to pay to use a GPS unit that you have purchased. Let’s hope it stays that way and hope the GPS manufacturers never come up with that idea anytime soon.

    Once you buy the unit the signal for directions is free for the life of the unit. Things you do have to pay monthly for is if you want traffic updates. Also the maps become updated so eventually you have to pay for the new maps which cost between $50-$100
