I am a over-the-road truck driver and my blue-tooth gps unit started going out on me so I looked around for a replacement. Most of the review were positive and that had me really looking at this inexpensive gps. One person talked about loose connection I wonder if it might have been the user that had the loose connection as I have never had a problem with my laptop and gps bouncing around inside of the truck losing connection. I like the idea of a usb unit as I had already tried the blue-tooth versions and the batteries just do not last well for me as I drive between 5 to 11 hours a day. I have waited for several weeks after purchase and use to write this review as I wanted to give it a good try. I have drive all around the country during that time and I have been places where the road was next to a mountain cut-out on both sides of the road and still had gps lock the only places that I have lost gps signal was when I went through mountain tunnels but it picks back the signal on the other side within seconds. I would recommend this to anyone even if you are not a truck driver.

This is the fastest lock GPS device I have used, and I have used about a dozen. One thing though-I was having trouble with it crashing my Vista laptop after a couple hours of use. I Solved this by going to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Device Manager->Under Ports->Select Properties of Prolific USB-to-Serial…->Port Settings->Change Flow Control to Hardware then->Select Advanced->Change both buffers to 1. And that totally solved the blue screen issue I was having.

Very simple to use and very reliable. I’ve used this device with SeaClear II navigation software for nautical and auto navigation and have yet to find a problem. Comes with a CD that will help you define a com port (meaning you’ll assign one of your USB slots for use with the GPS). Also included is basic software to test and configure the device.

I have purchased two GlobalSat BU-353’s in the last couple of years and have loved using them with Microsoft’s US Streets and Trips (2009 currently) and Autoroute (the French/European version) and I have been frustrated by the difficult acquisition by the units of Satellite reception. Often I have had to open my window to hold the BU-353’s outside the car on the roof and even then it often takes several minutes or even longer to get a signal on normal unencumbered roads in the countryside. I therefore purchased a Navibe GM720 on a lark to see if it works better and the acquisition of satellite signals is unmeasurably superior. I have even unplugged one and plugged in the other in comparative tests and the Navibe GM720 acquires a signal almost instantly while the GlobalSat BU-353 takes a long time and sometimes the program cycles out before acquisition. I would be interested in knowing how different the circuitry is. After all cheap Garmins seem to acquire and retain a signal in almost any condition so why shouldn’t these USB models work just as well?
The one drawback of the GM720 is that its bottom is smooth and thus it slides all over the dashboard when my car turns quickly or accelerates. The GlobalSat model has a rough sort of rubbery bottom surface that tends to prevent sliding around.

I previously purchased a cheap (about $10) GPS receiver from another site, what a mistake. Took 5+ minutes to get a fix, and it would loose the fix going under overpasses on the freeway. Thought I’d actually do some research and find a decent receiver this time. Bought the GlobalSat BU-353, and it’s been great! Usually gets a fix from a cold start in less then a minute, and have even had it get a fix while the car’s still in the garage! I’ve only had it loose a fix one time, but it was because I was going through a tunnel, even still, the receiver picked up the fix up on the other side in just a few seconds.
The only issue I’ve ever had with it is that the base is a bit too slippery (since I try to keep it on the dash) and under hard cornering or acceleration, it’ll slide down the dashboard. The magnet on the base is really strong though, and if you were putting it on the roof, I don’t think it’d have a problem holding on.
